The Karamu House is known as the oldest black theater company in the U.S. and has been an incubator for some of the most well-known black artists since its opening in 1917. One of the most notable artists to cross paths with this Cleveland theater was playwright and poet Langston Hughes, who saw a number of his own plays debut on stage.

25 de sept. de 2018 · While in this position, Sias continued to perform in and direct productions throughout the city including Elevator at the Karamu House in 2001 and the Ensemble Theatre’s one-man show Paul Robeson. In 2003, while still working for the school district, Sias became the director of the All-City Musical and served as the artistic director of the Cleveland School of the Arts.
Karamu was also a contributor to the Harlem Renaissance, and Langston Hughes roamed the halls constantly. Reflecting the strength of the Black influence on its development, the Playhouse Settlement was officially renamed Karamu House in 1941. Karamu is a word in the Kiswahili language meaning “a place of joyful gathering”.
