In the novels her reverence and loyalty to Afton seem to be more a case of desperately seeking his approval and love rather than Afton being a nice father. Afton of the games may have been nicer and cared more about Elizabeth than the Afton of the books but that could've also have just been completely fakery like the snake he is.
