Joseph Jackson Lister Not much changed in basic microscope design over the next 200 years, but improvements in lens manufacture (such as the use of purer glass) helped to solve problems like colour distortion and poor image resolution. Mirrors were added to compound microscopes to add more light and improve the image.

Joseph Lister was born on April 5, 1827 in Upton, Essex, England. His father, Joseph Jackson Lister, was not only a wine merchant, but was also an amateur scientist. He was the second among three children. Coming from a family of Quakers, the young Joseph Lister also attended Quaker Schools in London and Hertfordshire.

Joseph Lister vient d'une famille quaker prospère de l'Essex. Il est le fils de Joseph Jackson Lister, un pionnier du microscope. Professeur de clinique chirurgicale à Glasgow, puis à Édimbourg et au King's College de Londres, il découvre, en 1865, la théorie des germes formulée par Louis Pasteur sur la putréfaction.
