David Banner was searching for a way to tap into the hidden strength that all humans have. Unfortunately, he found it. After bombarding his body with Gamma radiation, he found himself transforming into a near mindless green skinned monster every time he was under stress; worse still, this "Hulk" was wanted for the murder of David himself; who promptly went on the run.
In 1998, David killed off Banner's long-time love Betty Ross. Marvel executives used Ross' death as an opportunity to pursue the return of the Savage Hulk. David disagreed, leading to his parting ways with Marvel. Also in 1998, Marvel relaunched The Rampaging Hulk as a standard comic book rather than as a comics magazine.
David Banner takes his name from Bill Bixby's main character from the 1970s Incredible Hulk TV series, David having become his mainstream counterpart's middle name. David Banner's abilities after he is exposed to gamma radiation are similar to that of the Absorbing Man.
