The artist we know as Foujita was born Tsuguharu Fujita in 1886. Raised in Tokyo, his parents embraced Western culture and encouraged their son to learn French from an early age. After studying Western art at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts, in 1913 the young artist took a pivotal trip to Paris – and didn’t return home for twenty years.
