The Madcap Laughs ist das Debüt-Solo-Album des Singer-Songwriters Syd Barrett aus dem Jahr 1970. Das Album wurde aufgenommen, nachdem Barrett Pink Floyd, deren Mitbegründer und Frontman er war, 1968 verlassen hatte.. Das Werk weist eine bewegte Entstehungsgeschichte auf. Die Arbeiten am Album begannen im April 1968; gleichwohl wurde es inhaltlich erst im August 1969 fertiggestellt.
Released in a front laminated gatefold sleeve with the disc housed in the rear opening and the front opening is glued shut with no inner flap. The backcover states printing date 6911 (November 1969). This was clearly in advance of the 1970 release date. Variation 1: 'PATENT APPLIED FOR' and 'MADE IN ENGLAND'.
