Parafernalia extrafílmica aparte, Waterworld es una historia de acción futurista entretenida, de guión simplón y personajes poco interesantes. Como se busca el tirón comercial -hay que recuperar el mucho dinero gastado-, la película incluye numerosas concesiones a la galería, incluida alguna secuencia erótica bastante burda.
