American Gothic’ was first exhibited at The Forty–third Annual Exhibition of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago in October 1930. Wood received a bronze medal and a prize of $300 after the Painting, a not inconsiderable sum for a struggling artist.
