Roland Barthes (1915–1980) es un filósofo, ensayista y semiólogo francés perteneciente a la corriente estructuralista. Esta corriente, influida por los lingüistas Saussure, Benveniste y Jakobson y por el antropólogo Lévi-Strauss, supuso un antes y un después en el análisis de las sociedades.

Roland Barthes nació en Cherburgo el 12 de noviembre de 1915 y vivió en Bayona hasta 1924, cuando se trasladó a París. Tras licenciarse en lenguas clásicas en La Sorbona en 1939, fundó el Groupe de Théâtre Antique de París. Fue profesor en la capital francesa, en Biarritz y, posteriormente, en Rumania y Egipto.
