She was one of the first women to write in the genre. After marrying fellow writer Henry Kuttner she worked on many stories in close collaboration him, most often using the joint pseudonym "Lewis Padgett."

Her first professional publication, "Shambleau", appeared in Weird Tales in 1933, and was the first of many stories featuring the space adventurer Northwest Smith.
