Carol Emshwiller, the revered author of countless works of science fiction, fantasy, avant-garde literature, and magic realism, died last weekend, on February 2. She was 97 years old. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Agnes Carolyn Fries was one of five children, including a half-sister from her father’s previous marriage.
