In 1978 when he was 27, he became editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics which lasted until 1987. After a failed attempt to buy Marvel Comics, Shooter used his funding to start Valiant. After the huge success of Valiant's Unity crossover, Shooter felt he was forced out. He would later start Defiant which got sued out of business by Marvel.

We often brought in artists and writers just to have face to face meetings and to wine and dine them. It was a perk. Denny picked the Chelsea Hotel for Gene because it had “literary history.”.
They just hadn’t gone through boot camp like I had. So I developed a series of lectures which I started giving as editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics. The lectures were designed not to teach style, not to how to make comics Jim Shooter’s way. Just fundamentals. Little tidbits that I learned from the masters, passing on the wisdom of the ancients.
