One of the most influential artists in the history of modern painting, Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) has inspired generations of artists. Although he struggled for recognition in his own lifetime and often lacked confidence in his work, the artist's unique style, use of light and colour, and his interest in geometric forms above realism proved hugely influential on later artists, notably Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973).
