Mary Lindell (her full name was Gertrude Mary Lindell) was born on 11th September, 1895 to a wealthy family in Surrey. She had an impeccable upbringing and was extremely courageous and resourceful. During the first world war Mary served as a member of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) and later with the Secours aux Blesses, a division of the French Red Cross.
Mary Lindell embarked in 1940 upon the most important and dangerous mission of an already remarkable career. Hunted by the Gestapo and captured, released and captured again, she was the organiser and first link in the chain that enabled many Allied soldiers and fliers, including Major H.G. Hasler and Corporal W.E. Sparks of Cockleshell Heroes fame, to find their way back triumphantly to Britain.
