Barney Kessel (Muskogee, Oklahoma, 17 de outubro de 1923 — 6 de maio de 2004) foi um guitarrista de jazz norte-americano. Aos dezesseis anos começou a tocar guitarra influenciado pelo estilo de Charlie Christian, seu grande ídolo.

The latter even wrote a song, “To Barney Kessel” in 1975, though it wouldn’t be released until his demo’s collection, Scoop. Meanwhile, keyboardist Al Kooper has noted that the Blood, Sweat & Tears classic “Flute Thing,” covered by the likes of Seatrain and later sampled by the Beastie Boys, was influenced by a cadenza played by Kessel.

14 de oct. de 2015 · Considering that he began his career at the age of 14 playing with The Ellis Ezell Band, an all-black band that played black clubs throughout Oklahoma in the late 1930s, it’s safe to say that Barney Kessel could swing hard. At the time, Kessel’s playing was influenced mostly by Charlie Christian, the guitarist with Benny Goodman’s Sextet.
