Jackson Browne werd in 1948 geboren in het West-Duitse Heidelberg. Zijn vader, werkzaam in het Amerikaanse leger, was hier gestationeerd. Op jonge leeftijd vertrok hij met zijn familie naar Los Angeles, Californië, waar hij een interesse ontwikkelde voor folkmuziek. In 1966 werd hij gevraagd lid te worden van the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, waar hij enige maanden bij bleef.

En 1971, Jackson Browne signe avec Asylum Records et réalise son premier album Jackson Browne- Saturate before using ( 1972) qui comprend le hit Doctor My Eyes (en), mais aussi Jamaica Say You Will, Song for Adam et My Opening Farewell. À la même époque, Browne est coauteur avec Glenn Frey de Take It Easy le fameux hit des Eagles .
