In 1941, Sol Hurok commissioned Original Gypsy Dances to promote them. In 1942, she had a contract to act in the film Panama Hattie, but finally she didn’t appear in the finished version.
Hattie Maloney (Ann Sothern) is a gaudy, good-hearted nightclub singer who tends to love above her station. This time, it's pedigreed officer Dick Bulliet (Dan Dailey, Jr.), and it's for real. But there's one little problem: he's got a small daughter so ladylike she makes Emily Post look like Tugboat Annie -- and she's not impressed with Hattie's bangles and bows.
Cole Porter's musical hit Panama Hattie originally starred Ethel Merman on Broadway. But Merman was not a proven movie commodity, thus it was Ann Sothern who appeared in the film version as Hattie, brassy but golden-hearted proprietress of a Canal Zone hotel.
