Worked with Count Basie at the Apollo Theatre, New York (October 1943), with Dizzy Gillespie at The Onyx Club, New York, then rejoined Basie from December 1943 until September 1944 – he was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort MacArthur early in October 1944.
