Volgens anderen pleegde hij in de nieuwe band een machtsgreep. De band stond eerst bekend als The, en later als His Magic Band. Hoe dan ook, vanaf 1965 wierp hij zichzelf op als leider. De naam van de band is ontleend aan 'Captain Beefheart vs. the Grunt People', een nooit van de grond gekomen filmproject van Frank Zappa.

6 de jun. de 2023 · Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa were in a band called the Soots in 1963 and 1964. During that time, they recorded the blues shuffle “Metal Man Has Won His Wings.”. The lyrics were derived from a comic book pinned to a bulletin board. The Captain just rattled them off as the band played this live in another room.
Drummer, John 'Drumbo' French, was not credited on this album. (It is now accepted that his transcription of Beefheart's concepts/score for other band members was fundamental in its production.
