The family relocated to Los Angeles when his father landed the gig providing Sidney Poitier’s voice for Otto Preminger’s 1959 film of “Porgy and Bess.”
McFerrin was born on March 11, 1950, in New York City to Robert and Sara McFerrin, both professional singers. His father, a baritone, was the first African American to sing regularly with the Metropolitan Opera; his mother, a classically trained soprano, taught voice.
