Night of the Ghouls (which was also known as Revenge of the Dead) was Edward D. Wood Jr.'s first attempt at making a horror film without any contribution, either in a true performance or through the presence of archival footage, from Bela Lugosi, who had died three years earlier.

NIGHT OF THE GHOULS This was Ed's original title for the movie. Although the title was changed (apparently for previews), the film never had a full theatrical release at the time. Later, when the original footage was uncovered, it was released to video under its original title. Not to be confused with the Peter Cushing film Night of the Ghoul. VHS

Cast member Paul Marco recalled that the film had a preview screening in 1959 at the Vista Theatre in Hollywood, after which it disappeared from sight until 1984, when it was finally released on home video by entrepreneur Wade Williams.

In many ways, Night of the Ghouls makes a perfect send-off for William C. Thompson, who did as much as anyone to shape the look of the film's from Ed's "classic period" of the 1950s. Thompson makes these scenes, shot in crisp black-and-white, moody, mysterious, foreboding, and yet also quite alluring -- qualities also displayed by the great Universal horror features of the 1930s and 1940s.
