He spoke to artists, curators, museum visitors, professors, museum directors, and others involved in the liberal arts community in Boston.

  2. Zhang Peili’s work is commonly seen as a steady movement from painting to video. Zhang completed what is known as the first video work in China, in 1988, and exhibited the first Chinese video art in 1991, after which he consistently worked with more complex video installations.

    In 1984 Zhang Peili graduated from the oil painting department of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, later renamed the China Academy of Art (Zhongguo meishu xueyuan). He organized and participated in the exhibition ‘85 New Space’ (85 Xin kongjian), which developed out of the Youth Art Group (Qingnian chuangzuoshe) that was established in 1984 and comprised graduates from the Academy.
