David Hayes was born in Hartford, Connecticut on March 15, 1931, and died in Coventry, Connecticut on April 9, 2013. He grew up in Manchester and went to Manchester High School. Hayes received an A.B. degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1953 and an M.F.A. degree from Indiana University in 1955 where he studied with David Smith.
