Stargate Universe ist die dritte Stargate-Serie und bringt Menschen tiefer in den Weltraum als jemals zuvor. Der Handlungsbogen der Produzenten war ursprünglich für fünf Staffeln ausgelegt, davon wurden allerdings nur zwei produziert. Weitere Staffeln werden nicht folgen, die Idee von ein oder zwei Filmfortsetzungen wurde verworfen. Die Episodenlänge beträgt meist 42 Minuten.
SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists & civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course & unable to return to Earth. Faced with meeting the most basic needs, the group must unlock the secrets of the ship's Stargate to survive.

In going through the Stargate, they are transported not to Earth, but to a very old apparently uninhabited spacecraft. With the group's commander injured, Lt.
