    Thomas Emmett Hayden was born on December 12, 1940, in Royal Oak, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. He was the only child in a working-class Catholic family. His father, an accountant, left the family when Tom was a child. From that time on, his mother supported him by working as a librarian. Hayden first showed his rebellious nature in high school.
