Dream of Life es el quinto álbum de la cantante y compositora Patti Smith, lanzado en junio de 1988 por el sello discográfico Arista Records.Fue su primer álbum después de la disolución de The Patti Smith Group. Fred ”Sonic” Smith (14. syyskuuta 1949 – 4. marraskuuta 1994) oli yhdysvaltalainen kitaristi ja laulaja, joka muistetaan parhaiten yhtyeistä MC5 ja Sonic’s Rendezvous Band sekä laulaja Patti Smithin aviomiehenä. Hän soitti myös Patti Smithin albumilla Dream of Life.. Fred ja Patti Smith saivat yhdessä kaksi lasta: Jacksonin (s. 1981) ja Jessen (s. 1987).

Smith raised two children (son Jackson, 12, and daughter Jessie, 7) with his high-profile wife. In 1988, breaking a decade-long silence, Sonic cowrote and coproduced all the songs on Patti's comeback LP Dream of Life, and the couple collaborated on a song for the soundtrack to Wim Wenders's 1991 film Until The End of the World.
