Quatermass and the Pit is a British television science-fiction serial transmitted live by BBC Television in December 1958 and January 1959. It was the third and last of the BBC's Quatermass serials, although the chief character, Professor Bernard Quatermass, reappeared in a 1979 ITV production called Quatermass.Like its predecessors, Quatermass and the Pit was written by Nigel Kneale.
Quatermass were a British progressive rock band from London, active between 1969 and 1971. A related band, Quatermass II, was active in the mid-1990s. Career. The trio consisted of bass player and vocalist John Gustafson, keyboardist J. Peter Robinson and Mick Underwood on drums.
Quatermass performs admirably on this album functioning as a tight coherent trio. John Gustafson's bass playing is what I would call a moving bass. Fully engaged in the music and with strong melody of its own, these are the kinds of bass players you want in a trio. Likewise for Peter Robinson's Organ playing.
British band Quatermass made this one classic progressive rock album in 1970 that influenced Deep Purple at least. (There were connections between the Quatermass musicians and Ian Gillan, and the first Rainbow album includes a Quatermass cover.)

The film rights for The Quatermass Experiment were immediately bought by Hammer, and it didn’t take long before BBC commissioned a second series, Quatermass II (1955).
