Biografia. Originario dell'Ohio, è padre di Bobby Bare Jr., anch'egli musicista. Attivo dagli anni '50, tra le sue prime canzoni di successo vi è The All American Boy (1958), accreditata e interpretata da Bill Parsons.. Dal 1962 al 1970 è stato sotto contratto con la RCA Records, realizzando canzoni come Detroit City e registrando con Skeeter Davis, Norma Jean, Liz Anderson e Ian Tyson.

26 de ago. de 2011 · Way back in 1976 I was deep into rock & roll with a passing interest in country music. Almost by accident I heard "Me & McDill" and was blown away. I had heard Bobby Bare before (Detroit City, Millers Cave) but this album made me a fan. I remember hearing "Look Who I'm Cheating On Tonight" on the radio when it was a hit.

The latter became McDill’s first #1 hit, in 1975, and soon other artists were following Williams’s lead. Crystal Gayle, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Mickey Gilley all cut his compositions in the mid-’70s, and friend Bobby Bare recorded an entire album of his songs (1977’s Me and McDill).
