A stage and film actor of Irish descent he was a Shakespearean actor with the Bristol Old Vic with whom he played many parts including Hamlet (1958, 1963) and Waiting for Godot (1958), which he reprised at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1969.

Simon Gilbert does a credible approximation of O'Toole, for better and for worse ... but speaking for myself, it doesn't bother me as much as it seems to bother some folks. (I'm more bothered by the missing lyrics, actually.)
