On many "Best of" Western novels lists, Zane Grey's "Riders of the Purple Sage", Louis L'Amour's "Flint" and Jack Schaefer’s “Shane” sit in the top 3 positions. Depending on the list, these three alternate in each spot. This is one of my favorite novels. I just finished reading it for the second time a few weeks ago.
