The Dudley Spencer House, also called Laurel, is a Frank Lloyd Wright designed Usonian home in Wilmington, Delaware. Wright designed this home in 1956 and named it "Laurel". This house is of the hemicycle design, and is built of irregularly coursed fieldstone.
Such are the characteristics of the only Frank Lloyd Wright design in the state of Delaware: The Dudley Spencer house, which Wright named “Laurel” is also a Usonian and it blends well with the surrounding wooded environment in Wilmington.
Delaware’s only Frank Lloyd Wright -designed home was on the market for the first time ever in 2013. Known as The Dudley Spencer House, the sale on this historic gem was pending at the time this segment was being finished, after the death of Dr. Spencer – the builder and only owner of the residence.
Dudley W. Spencer House. Delaware has few buildings by internationally famous architects. One of Wright's later designs, this small Usonian home was commissioned in 1954. Spencer built it himself over several years, and it was unfinished when Wright died in 1959.
One of Delaware’s architectural treasures was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Dudley Spencer House in Wilmington is privately owned and not open for tours but Wilmington is still a beautiful place to visit or vacation!
