Auguste Rodin achieved the reputation of the father of modern sculpture with his iconic and powerful bronze portraits.
Sculpturally, Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, deeply pocketed surface in clay. Many of his most notable sculptures were roundly criticized during his lifetime. They clashed with predominant figurative sculpture traditions, in which works were decorative, formulaic, or highly thematic.
Following his earlier practice with the sculptures from The Gates of Hell, Rodin extracted a number of the figures from the various models for the Monument to Victor Hugo and presented them as independent sculptures. These include the Iris, Messenger of the Gods in an enlarged and truncated version ( 1984.364.7 ).
