Yan'an[a] is a prefecture-level city in the Shaanbei region of Shaanxi province, China, bordering Shanxi to the east and Gansu to the west. It administers several counties, including Zhidan (formerly Bao'an), which served as the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) before the city of Yan'an proper took that role.

Yan'an is one of the 24 famous historic cities of China. Besides the Yellow Emperor's Mausoleum, there are over 800 historical and cultural relics, including ancient towers built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the stone carving clusters and temples of the Song Dynasty (960-1234).
