The company's founder, Spyros Metaxa, was born in 1848 into a family of Greek silk merchants. Exposed during his travels to spirits and wines from around the world, he created Metaxa in 1888, when he owned a tavern.
Spyros Metaxa was born on the Greek Island Kefalonia. In 1888 he created a brandy blended with wine known as "Metaxa". The company soon expanded and exported across the world. After his death, his sons continued to run the business, which was the only Greek industry to survive the two World Wars.
