The Ohara Museum of Art (大原美術館, Ōhara Bijutsukan) in Kurashiki was the first collection of Western art to be permanently exhibited in Japan. The museum opened in 1930 and originally consisted almost entirely of French paintings and sculptures of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Ohara Museum of Art (大原美術館, Ōhara Bijutsukan) was Japan's first museum of Western art. It is a private museum consisting of three adjacent buildings next to the canal and a separate building located in Ivy Square .
Although this isn't a typical Japanese Art museum, it's very well done and contains some excellent art - well curated and in a gorgeous setting. Once inside, you can follow the suggested trail using the guided tour by headphones or just wander to things that interest you most.
