Jacques Brel . Belgian-born Brel (1929-1978) is one of the most famous French singers and lyricists of all time. Some of his songs have an upbeat rhythm, but often his lyrics and subject matter are sad and/or thought-provoking. His most famous performance is probably the heartbreaking “Ne me quitte pas.”
