Then, in that spring of 1973, Diana Vreeland joined The Metropolitan Museum of Art as Special Consultant to The Costume Institute, and almost immediately, literally from the very first of her legendary exhibitions, "The World of Balenciaga," a large and enthusiastic audience discovered costume, not only in New York but around the world as well.

The exhibitions staged by Diana Vreeland identiied modes like the celebratory retrospective devoted to the individual designer, or to a crucial moment in the evolution of Western fashion, such as the 18th century or the period of the avant-garde movements.
Under her guidance and patronage, the Costume Institute would launch several spectacular exhibits that attracted the social elite and received high profile publicity. Among her Costume Institute triumphs were "The World of Balenciaga" in 1972 and "Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design" in 1974.
The first of Vreeland’s iconic exhibitions, ‘The World of Balenciaga’ in 1973, set the tone for what was to come. This show paid tribute to the legendary Spanish couturier Cristobal Balenciaga and showcased his innovative and sculptural designs.
