The San peoples (also Saan), or Bushmen, are the members of any of the indigenous hunter-gatherer cultures of southern Africa, and the oldest surviving cultures of the region. Their recent ancestral territories span Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and South Africa.
The majority of San people alive today live in abject poverty and experience low standards of living. Indeed, they have become Southern Africa’s poorest people. Around 100 000 San Bushmen are alive currently, most of whom are strangers to the traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle.

The San were also known as 'Bushmen', a term used by the European Colonists that is now considered derogatory. The San populated South Africa long before the arrival of the Bantu-speaking nations, and thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans.
