Dating back to Colonial days, the rock was used to build casonas, churches and public buildings – like the churches and principal square in Arequipa’s centre. Arequipa (Spanish pronunciation:; Aymara and Quechua: Ariqipa), also known by its nicknames of Ciudad Blanca (Spanish for "White City") and León del Sur (Spanish for "Lion of the South"), is a city in Peru and the capital of the eponymous province and department.
Arequipa is known as the White City because of its architecture, built with white volcanic stone, called sillar. However, many people have thought of giving it another name, since their landscapes are surrounded by four imposing volcanoes. Hence, Arequipa is often referred to as “the White City” in Peru. The city is divided by the Chili River, running from north to south. It is bordered by the Andes Mountains to the north and east, while the south and west lead to the sub-ranges of the Andes, marked by thick layers of volcanic lava.
