Walter Thomas Varney (December 26, 1888 – January 25, 1967) [1] [2] was an American aviation pioneer who founded forerunners of two major U.S. airlines, United Airlines [3] and Continental Airlines, [4] which combined under United Continental Holdings long after his death.
In 1920 Walter Varney was one of the featured pilots in an aerial circus that performed at an event in Oakland, across the bay from San Francisco. In November of 1920 he preformed at Modesto’s Golden Jubilee and Armistice Day Celebration where he flew his new Hispano Suiza Airplane with a 220 horse power engine.

6 de abr. de 2018 · Walter T. Varney, a pilot in the aviation section of the U.S. Signal Corps during World War I, had won an airmail contract in the fall of the previous year. This contract was one of the first to be awarded to a private airline by the U.S. Post Office Department for designated mail-delivery routes.
On April 26, 1926, the first commercial airmail flight in the United States departed from Boise, Idaho to fly to Elko, Nevada. For his role in the development of commercial airmail service to Nevada, Varney earned his place in the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame.
