Beautifully preserved fossils of Stenopterygius have been found in Germany. Its skull was extended into a kind of a beak and was armed with a quantity of large teeth. The limbs had been transformed to fin-like structures.

Stenopterygius quadriscissus is an ichthyosaur, an extinct animal whose body shape closely resembled that of today's fast-swimming fishes such as the tuna. This well-preserved specimen is an ichthyosaur that died and was buried while giving birth to live young.

The fossil is so well-preserved that its soft-tissues retain some of their original flexibility.
