Soft Machine are a British rock band from Canterbury formed in mid-1966 by Mike Ratledge, Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Daevid Allen and Larry Nowlin.
From psychedelia, sharing stages with Syd Barrett's Floyd the Hendrix Experience to becoming one of Europe's best known 'fusion' groups, Soft Machine has influenced several generations of jazz-rock bands, and continues to be name-checked by today's hip experimentalists.
