En 1977 Piano abrió una oficina de Génova con el ingeniero Peter Rice. De allí salieron trabajos como la «Habitación-laboratorio» en Perugia (1979), así como el Museo de la Menil Collection en Houston, Texas (1981-1986). Un pabellón de deportes en Rávena (1986), un estadio en Bari (1987-90) y el Synchroton de Grenoble (1987)
Dominique and John de Menil asked Renzo Piano in 1981 to make a museum in Houston to host their collection of primitive African art and modern surrealist art, one of the most important in the world.
Main Building. Opened in 1987 and designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the main building houses art from the prehistoric to the present day. Exhibited in sky-lit galleries, the collection continues to grow. Paintings, sculptures, decorative objects, prints, works on paper, photographs, and rare books are on view.
The museum houses the art collection of Dominique and John de Menil – more than 10,000 works of ancient, African and surrealist modern art. Apart from the spaces dedicated to these works, the building also houses a picture frame workshop and a studio for art restoration and study.
