Plot. Peter Sidenius, often just called Per, is a young aspiring engineer from a devout Christian family in Western Denmark. His father is a stern man who expects that his sons will be priests like himself.

The film is set in the late 19th century when the main character Peter Sidenius gets accepted to study engineering at a university. He leaves rural Jutland for Copenhagen and breaks ties with his overbearing, pious father and Christian, more specifically calvinist background.

Per también se familiariza con las encantadoras hermanas Salomon, especialmente con la mayor, Jakobe cuya visión del mundo, profunda y humanista, acaban por atraerlo.
[Lykke Per]. Protagonista de la breve novela de su nombre (1870) del escritor danés Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), y de la larga novela, también titulada con su nombre, del escritor danés Henrik Pontoppidan (1857-1943). El Pedro de Andersen es una idealización autobiográfica.
