Smith was born in Okinawa, Japan and raised in Tennessee. [1] Trained as a printmaker, he initially began working with collages in the early 2000s. [2] He combined photocopies, documents and drawing in layers to create abstract images reacting to surreal and expressionist ways of painting.
Josh Smith creates minimalistic works with symbols and brushstrokes that explore communication and expression. His artworks are in the collections of MoMA, Whitney, and Pompidou, among others.

American artist Josh Smith is renowned for the diversity of his artistic practice and for the wide range of different styles in which he works. Originally trained as a printmaker, but primarily known for his paintings, Smith also makes sculptures, ceramics, books, prints and posters, and is a consummate draftsman.
Josh Smith is an Okinawa-born American contemporary artist based in New York. While known for his various series of abstract and semi-abstract paintings, Smith's diverse practice spans a range of mediums and styles as he reflects and counters cultural norms and contemporary art tastes.
