A vintage Fox movietone motion picture camera. Movietone News evolved from an earlier newsreel established by Fox Films called Fox News which was founded in 1919. It produced silent newsreels. When Fox entered talkies in 1928 with Mother Knows Best, the name Fox Movietone was applied to Fox's sound productions.
Paper holdings provide detailed notes generated by original camera crews as well as ephemera related to individual stories. Within the collection are elements from two distinct newsreel products. One is a silent newsreel, Fox News, which ran from 1919 into 1930.
The Fox Movietone News library is one of the most comprehensive news film archives of the twentieth century. Running from October 1927 to October 1963, Fox Movietone News was one of the earliest and longest running of all the American Newsreels (and was itself a spinoff of its silent progenitor, Fox News).

All of Fox's sound feature films were made using the Movietone system until 1931 when it was superseded by a Western Electric recording system using the light-valve invented by Edward C. Wente in 1923. However, Fox Movietone News used the system until 1939, because of the ease of transporting the single-system's sound film equipment.
The Cinesound Movietone Australian Newsreel Collection held at the NFSA comprises 4,000 newsreels from 1929 to 1975. It includes two competing cinema newsreels, Cinesound Review (1931 to 1970, 2,031 editions) and Fox Movietone News (1929 to 1970, 2,300 editions), as well as the Australian Movie Magazine (1970 to 1975, approximately 275 editions).
