An electrical burn is a burn that results from electricity passing through the body causing rapid injury. Approximately 1000 deaths per year due to electrical injuries are reported in the United States, with a mortality rate of 3-5%.
Electrical burns can cause damage by mechanisms suchs as skin burns from arc fire or by ignition of clothing, deep tissue burns by flow of current along the bones, concomitant traumatic injury and cardiac arrhythmia . Electrical burns are classified as high voltage (greater than 1000 volts) and low voltage (less than 1000 volts) injuries .
