The Paintings: In unusually tall, narrow paintings, the Crucifixion and Last Judgment emphasize the narrative features of these well-known biblical themes prophesied in Isaiah and related in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John for the Crucifixion, and in Deuteronomy and the Book of Revelation for the Last Judgment.
The Crucifixion and Last Judgement diptych (or Diptych with Calvary and Last Judgement) consists of two small painted panels attributed to the Early Netherlandish artist Jan van Eyck, with areas finished by unidentified followers or members of his workshop.

Yet, imagine our surprise when in a technical investigation of two of our most treasured paintings, The Crucifixion and The Last Judgment by Jan van Eyck, we discovered a mysterious fragmentary text! Although the paintings themselves have been the subject of frequent technical study, their original frames had not.

This focus exhibition presents the findings of a recent study of the Crucifixion and Last Judgment paintings (ca. 1440–41) by Jan van Eyck and his workshop. These paintings and their frames have undergone technical investigations in an effort to solve long-standing mysteries about them.
