The short answer is: If you use the Gregorian Calendar and start the first millennium with the year 1 AD then the third millennium began with the year 2001 AD.
Article by NRICH team. Published 2011 Revised 2017. The New Millennium: When Did it Begin? Not everybody agreed if the Third Millennium actually began on January 1st in the year 2000 AD, despite the fact that many millennium celebrations took place around the world.
The new millennium, as defined by the Gregorian Calendar used in most of the world, actually began on January 1, 2001, not January 1, 2000. All of the "millennium" celebrations at the end of 1999 were one year too early! (Not that I object in any way to a good party!)
