The lion ( Panthera leo) is a large cat of the genus Panthera, native to Africa and India. It has a muscular, broad-chested body; a short, rounded head; round ears; and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. It is sexually dimorphic; adult male lions are larger than females and have a prominent mane.

Lions are the world's most social felines. They live in groups of related females, called prides, which may comprise several to as many as 40 individuals, including adults, sub-adults (between the ages of 2 and 4) and cubs, plus one or more resident males. Abundance of prey availability plays a significant role in the size of a lion pride.

Lions are very sociable big cats and seem to enjoy interacting with other pride members with lots of head rubbing, grooming, and playing. Most of the females in a pride are related and have close bonds – mothers, daughters, aunts, cousins etc.
